GEORGIA: Statue to honor Liberty County NAACP founder could make Georgia history
LIBERTY COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – A call for community support in Liberty County. A statue honoring the Liberty County NAACP could make history in our area.
The chapter is looking to get a statue placed at the courthouse, in honor of their founder.
WTOC visited the Liberty County Courthouse where the NAACP Chapter is working to get a statue of their founder, right here on these grounds.
Representative Al Williams said this could be the first statue of an African American at a courthouse, in the entire state of Georgia.
“The NAACP Chapter was founded by Ralph Quarterman in 52, but it was really kicked off in 1953. It was one of the few rural NAACP chapters in Georgia at the time,” said Williams.
State Representative Al Williams said the chapter remains one of the oldest in this area. Now, wanting to keep the legacy of both Quarterman and the chapter alive.
“Chairman Lovette shared with me a headline from the newspaper in 1960 when he became the first African American to run for county wide office in Liberty County. So it is very important,” said Williams.
They’re calling on the community for support. The kind they said will mirror what Quarterman did as a civil activist here in the county.
“We have to raise $125,000 to put this statue right where we’re standing. We think that’s a reasonable ask and we certainly need the support of the community,” said Williams.
The support that he said Quarterman gave many in this community for many years. Support that he’s getting from the county, and chapter leadership.
“This gives young people, students, the opportunity to see what a person did with so many odds against him. He made it work,” said Williams.
