SOUTH CAROLINA: Atlanta Man Arrested Trying to Take Down Confederate Flag Off I-85

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrested a man after he attempted to take down the giant Confederate flag off of Interstate 85.

According to deputies, Deputy Roldan responded after a report of trespassing on Saturday night, July 13, at mile marker 76 on the southbound side of I-85.

When Roldan arrived on the scene, he was told by the complainant that a man climbed the fence into a property on Teaberry Road in Spartanburg, South Carolina in an attempt to lower the Confederate flag that can be seen overlooking I-85.

When deputies arrested James Blitch, 23, of Atlanta, Georgia for trespassing, Blitch said he tried to lower the flag because he did not agree with the flag.

According to Roldan, Blitch said he was able to climb the fence by climbing a tree to get to the top of the fence and over. Blitch was in possession of tools including a Dremel and drill bits at the time of his arrest.

Officers said Blitch also added that he drove from Atlanta on Saturday to lower the flag before returning home.

Blitch was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center and charged with trespassing into an enclosed space under a $460 cash surety bond, deputies said.
